The first few years of Max’s life, I constantly worried about his nutrition and dog food. Even though I had him on high end food, he just didn’t seem like he felt well. His stomach would make noise, and he sometimes wasn’t interested in eating. His coat was kind of rough too. He also had super sensitive skin and was really allergic to bee stings and other insect bites. I carried Benadryl with when we walked, and by the time Max was about three, I was giving him allergy medicine almost every day.
He also developed a bump under his chin that was sketchy looking. I took him to the vet, and they wanted to cut it out and test for skin cancer. I had known that Boxers are prone to cancer, but I was shocked that he could have developed it so soon in his life.
I had just gotten into essential oils and was loving the effects on my health. When I was researching frankincense, I learned that it was being studied for cancer healing. I decided to try and heal Max’s spot with frankincense and coconut oil. I put it on three times a day for six weeks, and it did heal completely!
The fact that Max had developed a possibly cancerous spot in his first three years of life deeply disturbed me. I read tons of articles on dog health, dog food, and cancer in dogs. I finally came to the conclusion that it had to be his food and began the process of learning how to home cook for him.
It was terrifying to take his nutrition fully into my hands and to go against everything I had ever heard from vets and dog food companies. The crazy thing is that Max started feeling better within days of switching to home cooked food. He also absolutely loved eating his food!
Max turns 7 this Wednesday, and he hasn’t had an issue with bee or insect stings/bites and hasn’t needed Benadryl since a few weeks after the food switch! His coat is so smooth and shiny, his teeth look great for his age, and he still loves to eat. He loves trying new recipes and makes me feel like an amazing cook every day!
